The knitters didn’t follow SkyKnit’s directions exactly, as it turns out. This possibly marks one of the few times in history when a computer generated code to be executed by humans. SkyKnit also had trouble counting stitches, and would confidently declare at the end of certain lines that it contained 12 stitches when it was nothing of the sort.īut the knitters began knitting them. ![]() ![]() It could count rows fairly reliably up to about 22, but after that would start haphazardly guessing random largish numbers. It would sometimes repeat rows, or leave them out entirely. Here’s a later example.Įven at its best, SkyKnit had problems. MrsNoddyNoddy wrote, “it’s difficult to explain why 6395, 71, 70, 77 is so asthma-inducingly funny.” (It seems that a 6000-plus stitch count is, as GloriaHanlon put it, “optimism”).Īs training progressed, and as I tried some higher-performance models, SkyKnit improved. Then, not knowing if they had produced anything remotely knittable, I started posting the patterns. I gave the knitting patterns to a couple of neural networks that I collectively named “SkyKnit”. JC Briar exported another 4728 patterns from the site. The knitters helped me crowdsource a dataset of 500 knitting patterns, ranging from hats to squids to unmentionables. (When asked how I should describe them, one wrote “don’t forget the glitter and swearing!”)Īnd so, we embarked upon Operation Hilarious Knitting Disaster. She sent me to the Ravelry knitting site, and to its adults-only, often-indecorous LSG forum, who as you will see are amazing people. I knew almost nothing about knitting when sent me the suggestion one day. One of the toughest problems I’ve ever tried? Knitting patterns. When the problem is tough, the results are mixed (there was that one candy heart that just said HOLE). I’ve trained neural networks to generate new paint colors, new Halloween costumes, and new candy heart messages. I, however, like to give them silly datasets. They power corporate finances, recognize faces, translate text, and more. What’s fun about neural networks is they learn by example - give them a bunch of some sort of data, and they’ll try to figure out rules that let them imitate it. I use algorithms called neural networks to write humor.

Species accumulation curves allow the number of species still to be discovered in a certain habitat to be estimated, using the number of species of a certain phylum or group described over the last centuries ( Bebber et al., 2007 Mora et al., 2008). The increasing threats to our oceans, however, are likely to drive many species to extinction before we can catalog them and learn about their habits, life cycle and, most importantly, their role in the ecosystem. ![]() (2011) estimated the number of species found in the oceans to be around 2.2 million, with over 90% still undescribed. ![]() A more surprising habitat that is highly diverse is the deep sea, upon which this review will focus. In the marine realm, there are a several hotspots of biodiversity that are widely accepted, such as mangrove forests or coral reefs. Generally, higher genetic diversity in a population is beneficial, as populations are able to withstand a broader range of environmental conditions and are more resilient to changes within ecosystems ( Gray, 1997 Des Roches et al., 2018). Using genetics and taxonomy, diversity can be measured between individuals and their populations, which can provide important information on, for example, life history stages and migration. There is little hope for areas in which exploitation, such as deep-sea mining, will be directly impacting the benthos and proper regulations are required to preserve biodiversity in the deep sea.īiodiversity describes the variety of organisms living in a certain habitat and can be analyzed within and between species. It remains uncertain whether the deep sea is resilient toward anthropogenic disturbances, yet this is difficult to research on short timescales. Many mysteries persist in the deep sea, but it is certain that threats such as overfishing, plastic pollution, and changes in ocean chemistry due to climate change are impacting even the most remote places in the oceans. Unfortunately, this diversity is threatened by human impact similarly to shallow waters, and future endeavors such as deep-sea mineral extraction must be considered as a major threat to the environment. In addition, the different environments in which biodiversity is studied are presented, and the various hypotheses on how high biodiversity is possible are examined. In this review, the different methodologies used to examine biodiversity in the remote depths of the oceans are considered. With a multitude of different environments and conditions previously thought to be inhabitable, it is unclear how such high diversity was able to develop, but habitat heterogeneity and nutrient flux are certainly important factors to consider. The deep sea is the most extensive habitat on our planet, and it supports surprisingly high biodiversity.

Besides, the cheapest pass for that Six Flags in New Jersey is $74.99. According to the Times Square Alliance, there were 23 percent more pedestrians on average last week in the district compared to a year before. It’s clear that for the developers of skyscrapers, catering to tourists makes great business sense, especially since they seem to be willing to pay a premium for anything with “immersive” or “experiential” in the name. At a new 650-room development by TSX Broadway*, guests will be able to pay for special access to celeb performances on a stage that hangs over Times Square. (I'm still not a fan of turning the show into a romance, but.)īut. ![]() It's nice to see Felicity all happy and not crying and freaking out every five seconds. Oliver and Felicity actually seem really good. ( You can read my screed on Lance's idiocy here.) And treating Oliver like a "monster" and claiming that he brought the darkness with him from Lian Yu, conveniently forgetting that if Oliver hadn't shown up Malcolm Merlyn would have destroyed half the city. Oh well.Īnd Lance is still treating Laurel like a child. Nope, Diggle is mad and throwing a big temper tantrum and stomping his feet. Even his wife has forgiven and understands. Meanwhile, Diggle is still being a big, whiny cry-baby about Oliver kidnapping his family last season. She's just annoyed when Oliver chastises her for taking things too far with her aggression. Thea has a dark side which we should probably blame on being resurrected in the waters of the Lazarus Pit. I look forward to finally seeing how he becomes the fighting machine he is now.īack in black/green: A lot of the relationship drama that existed last season remains. One big one is in the flashback segments, where Oliver is kidnapped by ARGUS and sent back to Lian Yu ("purgatory" in Mandarin.) Pretty much every flashback segment since the island has been a huge letdown so I'm glad he's back. What a hypocrite.īack to the island: Many things are coming full circle this season. This isn't the first time he's helped the bad guys. I suspect he's working with Darhk because of some threat to his family, but still. I've been pissy about Lance's character for a while now, and things don't look to be changing. Captain Lance takes a bullet, but we find out later that's because he's working with the enemy. Either way, right off the bat the Ghosts take out most of the city leadership. Very Ra's al Ghul-esque I suppose, though perhaps there's a twist. Better yet, he's played by the marvelous Neal McDonough who can pull off creepy like no other. Ra's should be the villain of villains but he was just a joke last season.) Indeed Darhk good very well be the best villain since Malcolm Merlyn. So much better and more ominous and mysterious than Ra's al Ghul. Oliver is a little more wary of returning, but he falls in line.Ī new villain: Damien Darhk is the show's new uber-villain, and he's a pretty excellent choice. ![]() So Thea and Laurel go to pay a visit to the lovebirds, and Felicity jumps at the chance to go help. The "Ghosts" are too well trained and they commit suicide when defeated rather than being captured. Only this time, months after the departure of Oliver and Felicity, the remaining team can't handle it. Her conversation with Oliver, while he's on the boat home from Lian Yu in the final flashback, is incredibly poignant and tragic, considering Moira's fate in Arrow Season 2.Trouble in hell: Meanwhile, in the hellish city-scape that is Starling City-er, Star City now as it's been given a comic book rebranding-is in trouble again. But while the other characters each have well-fitting and important roles in the episode's events, Moira's scene is perhaps the most emotional of the whole season. The same care given to Slade is also given to the episode's other returning guest stars - Laurel Lance's doppelganger Black Siren, Nyssa al Ghul, Captain Boomerang, Malcolm Merlyn and Moira Queen. The return of Slade could have very easily been mishandled, wasting the character yet again after his disappointing return in Season 3, but great care is given to show that the mercenary truly is Oliver's brother, deep down. Over the course of the episode, Slade consistently proves himself to be a trustworthy ally, and the audience feels their brotherhood slowly being re-established following years of absence. Despite their antagonistic past, the two are able to put their differences behind them and come together to stop Prometheus. The episode starts off with a bang, depicting the reunion of Oliver Queen and Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. 12/11/2023 0 Comments Sea salt sherwin williams![]() You might want a blue/green but want something with more blue than green, so that’s why it’s important to not skip this step! Test it out I personally think Opaline has more green than blue, but since it’s technically a blue green, if you play up blue, decor-wise you can pull out more blue from the paint color and vice versa. With blue green hues like Opaline, tones in this family will either have more blue or more green, and really the only way to know which color has more of another is to compare it to other blue/greens. I cannot tell you how hard it is to spot undertones without doing this. It’s also the easiest way to identify undertones. I was taught the easiest way to identify the correct color for your project is to compare colors with other colors. I’ve used this photo before, but can you see how the blue green on the walls really relates to nothing in the room. With non-neutral colors like Opaline (a neutral is white, taupe, beige or gray) you want to make sure the room’s decor scheme can carry Opaline.Įssentially, if you’re choosing Opaline for your wall color, your room needs to have either a good amount of blue or a good amount of green or both! You don’t want the blue green in Opaline to be the only blue green in the room, as it’s just not going to do anything to enhance your decor. When you read my post on picking the right paint colors (that I linked above) you’ll understand when you would choose a blue/green, but in a nutshell, paint is always supposed to accentuate your decor. ![]() This is why testing out a color and observing it throughout the day is really key. Or, you might like the barely-there mint hue that’s left. If it faces the sun and has large windows, you really might find yourself feeling disappointed by how pale it looks. I love a good blue-green hue…who doesn’t? But if you really want that yummy goodness of bluish green you want to make sure it’s going to pack a punch, not get washed out.īecause Opaline is so light you really have to carefully observe the natural light the room you want to paint receives each day. ![]() Here’s four tips that will ensure you don’t get the paint color wrong, because we all know how frustrating that is! After you read these tips, if you haven’t read my post on picking paint colors, I highly suggest you do! Observe your lightīy know you know, Opaline is a pretty light color, but what you might not know is how Opaline’s LRV will affect its appearance in a lot or very little light. How do I know if Sherwin Williams Opaline is right for my space? Palladian Blue is the darkest out of the three hues I’m comparing to Opaline and at LRV of 57, this pretty blueish green really makes a statement. Opaline doesn’t make quite the statement rainwashed makes, in terms of impact. Rainwashed is considerably darker than Opaline, with an LRV of 59, compared to Opaline’s 72. A darker color will hold its own much better than a lighter one in a room with a lot of sunlight. If you really like Opaline but have a lot of natural light, perhaps consider Sea Salt. Opaline and Sea Salt are pretty darn close except Sea Salt is a little darker than Opaline. Opaline also looks fabulous in a bathroom and I’ve recently named this color as one of my top choices for bathroom cabinet colors. You can also play up the green more in Opaline when you pair it with darker green hues and here’s some of the best dark green paint colors I recommend most. I like Opaline with darker blue greens, as well as with terra cotta colors and dark blue paint colors. Opaline will work with a lot of different decor schemes as it has both blue and green tones. To give you a frame of reference, some off white colors are in the 80s, so Opaline is pretty light. Light reflectance value refers to how light or dark a color is, with 0 being absolute black and 100 being pure white. In terms of light depth, Opaline is fairly light, with a light reflectance value of 72. Opaline is one of my favorite shades of blue green, as it’s light enough to work as a backdrop that doesn’t steal the show, but can also be elevated to center-stage with the right decor and accessories. Thinking about using Opaline in your next home project but not quite sure if it will work well in your space? Stick around, as I’ll go over exactly what you need to know about choosing this pretty paint color and when it works best. Not the lightest hue in its category, but certainly not a tone with significant pigment, Opaline is a tone homeowners look to for bathrooms, kids rooms and even living rooms. A light sea-foam tone, Sherwin Williams Opaline is stunning. 12/11/2023 0 Comments Mourns young starlet![]() “It quickly gets into a legal gray area, like parents taking photos of their kids, so prosecutors have been reluctant to use it as a tool,” he said.
